Stichting Berg & Van Dalen heeft ten doel met de middelen van de kunst, de artistieke, culturele en wetenschappelijke verwantschap tussen Nederland en Japan te onderzoeken en verbeelden. Dat doet zij onder meer door het organiseren van exposities, lezingen, workshops, performances, films, publicaties en Artist In Residency programma’s.

Inspiratie
De Stichting vindt haar inspiratie in de uitzonderlijke relatie die Nederland en Japan ruim 250 jaar lang (van 1600 t/m 1859) met elkaar onderhielden. Gedurende die periode, waarin Japan vrijwel hermetisch van de buitenwereld was afgesloten, was Nederland het enige westerse land waarmee goederen werden verhandeld, en kennis en kunst werd uitgewisseld. In toenemende mate ontwikkelden beide landen gedurende deze periode een wederzijdse interesse in elkaars gedachtegoed en omgangsvormen.
Sinds 2000, het jaar waarin de 400-jarige betrekkingen tussen Nederland en Japan werden herdacht, is er weer volop aandacht en waardering voor de unieke relatie en dialoog tussen beide landen.
De naam
De naam van de stichting — Berg & Van Dalen — is geïnspireerd op een kleine, opmerkelijke anekdote uit de rijke geschiedenis van de Japans–Nederlandse betrekkingen. Het betreft het verhaal over twee burgemeesters families uit Shimonoseki; de meest zuidwestelijke stad op Honshu, het hoofdeiland van Japan. De familie Ito en de familie Sanobu werden resepctievelijk Van den Berg en Van Dalen genoemd omdat het zulke Hollandofielen waren. Vooral burgemeester Van den Berg had de gewoonte zich nog hollandser dan de Hollanders te kleden en zijn hele huis was ingericht als een Hollands Curiositeiten Kabinet. Hierdoor verwierf hij de spotnaam De Malle. Een naam waar hij nóg trotser op schijnt te zijn geweest dan op zijn ‘oorspronkelijke’ Hollandse naam.

Inspiration
The foundation’s inspiration comes from the exceptional 250 year long relationship Japan and the Netherlands maintained in the years 1600-1859. In a period where Japan was almost hermetically cut of from the outside world, the Dutch were the only western country that had permission to trade and exchange knowledge with the Japanese. In this period both countries developed an increasing interest in each other’s way of thinking and etiquettes.
2000 marked the year where Japan and the Netherlands had a 400 year long ongoing relationship. This sparked new life in the attention and appreciation for the unique relationship and dialogue between these two countries.
The name
The name of the foundation -Berg & van Dalen- is inspired by a small, remarkable anecdote from the rich historical, cultural relationship between Japan and the Netherlands. The story is about two mayors’ families from Shimonoseki; the most southern city of Honshu, the main island of Japan.The family ‘’Ito’’ and ‘’Sanobu’’ were respectively called the family ‘’van den Berg’’ and ‘’van Dalen’’because of their image as ‘’Hollandophiles’’. Especially mayor van den Berg had the habit of dressing more Dutch then the actual Dutch people. His whole house was decorated like with Dutch oddities. Because of this the Dutch people called him ‘’De Malle’’ or ‘’The madman’’. Against everyone’s expectations the mayor was even more proud of his new nickname then his original Dutch name.

インスピレーション
1600年から1859年までの約250年間、オランダと日本は特別な（貿易）関係を結んでいました。この時期、日本は世界から切り離され、西洋で唯一オランダだけが貿易相手国として物品や美術品、さらには知識を行き来させていました。そして互いを知るうちに、物事に対する考え方や対処方法が違うという事に気がつきます。
2000年はオランダと日本のパートナー関係の400周年でした。400周年のおかげでオランダと日本の特別な関係再び注目を集められました。
財団の名前
「Berg en van Dalen」は日本とオランダの関係歴史の面白い物語に触発されました。本州の下関市の二つの市長家族の伊藤家とサノブ家の物語です。伊藤家は「van den Berg」と呼ばれていました. サノブ家は「van Dalen」と呼ばれていました。なぜなら、オランダが大好きでした。オランダの伝統的な服を着ているし、家の中でオランダのデコレーションがたくさんがたくさんありました。オランダ人は伊藤市長を「Malle」と呼ばれていました、「malle」はおかしい人といいう意味ですが、伊藤市長はこのオランダの名前が大好きでした。
